How Can You Tell If You Have A Flea Problem?

What is flea infestation?

The flea is a tiny, wingless insect that generally feeds on the blood of animals. But this flea sometimes also feeds on the blood of humans. There are many different types of fleas. Fleas don’t have wings, but they have flat bodies and strong legs, which allow them to jump long distances. They travel by attacking one person or animal to the others.

Many dogs and cats get infested with fleas, but they do not show any signs of infestation. They don’t scratch or itch their skin as some other pets might. If you have any doubt that your pet is infected by flea, it is important to consult a veterinarian to discuss the best course of treatment.

Several types of flea treatments are available, including topical ointments or oral medications that have to be prescribed by a veterinarian. The first line of defense should always start with your veterinarian, as they will determine the right treatment for your pet based on their age, size, and weight. But it is also possible to treat your pet with over-the-counter medications that are specially formulated for dogs or cats. Before the treatment what is essential to know that is what causes the flea infestation.

What causes flea infestations?

Flea bites are the most common cause of skin irritation in pets, especially during warm months. These tiny parasites live all year round on cats and dogs. However, they thrive during the hot summer months when conditions. Fleas are mainly carried into homes by pets who have been feeding on animals infested with these pests. These lay eggs in carpets and pet bedding where they feed, mate, and lay their own. Moreover, Birds Cage can also cause flea infection if not properly cleaned and placed.

So you have suspected that there is a flea problem in your home. How can you tell if this is the case?

Some of the more common signs of fleas are listed below:

  • Black specks around your pet’s head and neck area are a sign for fleas, on their bedding, or everywhere else in your home. These may be flea droppings.
  • Dark brown or black shiny specks can also be the sign, which is actually flea excrement, found in the same areas as above.
  • Tiny red bites on your skin, which could be a sign of a dog or cat flea infestation. These bites will not have a red center in them like mosquito or chigger bites, but they will be itchy. And if you see lots of these bite marks in the same area, the chances are that fleas are the culprits.
  • Hiding or scratching your pet excessively – even if they do not show any other signs of flea infestation mentioned above, is a sure sign that your dog or cat has fleas. Fleas sometimes bite humans, so keep an eye out for unexplained itching too. When your pet scratches constantly, and you have a doubt of flea infestation, contact your veterinarian immediately.
  • Live fleas themselves, seen crawling on your pet’s skin or on their bedding. These pests will also be seen jumping away from their host when approached. If you see this happening, a visit to the veterinarian for a course of treatment is the best bet.
  • Pale gums, or a quick pulse in cats, could indicate anemia from severe flea infestation. If your pet shows any of these signs, it is important to consult a veterinarian.
  • A suggestion from your friends or relatives that you are pet may have fleas. It is often the case, so don’t feel embarrassed about seeing a vet if they think your pet might have fleas.

Important things you need to know about getting rid of a flea infestation

Flea infestations can be challenging to get rid of. To make sure that you are treating them properly, it is a good idea to consult with your veterinarian instead of doing your own false experiments. Your vet will often recommend a monthly flea treatment or an environmental solution (i.e., dehumidifiers or humidifiers), in addition to an on-animal treatment.

The good news is that a flea infestation can be taken care of with a little bit of patience and effort. But you will have to remain diligent if you want to get rid of the problem for good. For more information, contact your veterinarian today!
