Identifying Your Jackson Ant Problem

Getting rid of ants in the Jackson Metro area is a frustrating and ongoing chore. Just when you think you’ve figured out the best way to get rid of ants, they come back!

Often the fault lies with using the wrong ant control methods for your specific ant problem. Step one when you want to get rid of ants is finding out which type of ant you’re dealing with.

The Most Common Ants Around Jackson, MS

Ant control is much easier and more effective when you use targeted ant bait or ant repellent. The three most common ant problems in the Jackson Metro area are:

Little Black Ant Infestations

These tiny ants are only about 1/16 inch and shiny and black.  Little black ants spend the majority of their time outdoors.  You may recognize them as they forage along scent-marked trails and in between cracks and sidewalks. They scavenge in garbage bins, pet excrement, and other waste. As such, they can spread bacteria and disease.

They build their nests in wall voids, woodwork, baseboards, wall voids, and under carpeting.  For more on controlling little black ants, please visit https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Get-Rid-of-Tiny-Black-Ants-in-the-House/

Odorous House Ant Problems

Odorous house ants live in their thousands in nests in and around your house. They often invade kitchens and cupboards or anywhere they can get their snapping jaws on food.

If your home is being taken over by these ants, whatever, you do, don’t squish them. They’re named after the horrid smell, similar to rotten coconuts, that will ensue if you do.

Odorous house ants are around 1/16′′ to 1/8′′ long and brown or black in color.  During the summer, odorous house ants typically move their nests every 3-4 weeks.  Homeowners are most likely to encounter odorous house ants after heavy rains.

Fire Ant Invasions

Fire ants are prolific in the south. Their deep mounds contain hundreds of thousands of ants, extend 20ft into the soil, and harbor dozens of smaller hidden colonies.

Each colony can house dozens of queens, each capable of laying over 1,000 eggs a day! Fire ants usually stay outside but these small red ants could come indoors in search of food.

Control of fire ants can be difficult as treating a mound with insecticide just encourages them to move their nests to a different area.  The best control measure for fire ants is a process called the Texas two-step.  This involves baiting individual mounds as well as spreading a granular insecticide across the entire lawn.

Apart from these three types of ants, homeowners in Jackson often experience problems with carpenter ants, acrobat ants, and pavement ants too.
