Baby Cockroaches: How to Identify German, American, and Oriental Cockroaches

Just like a butterfly, cockroaches have also gone through three developmental phases. First is the egg, the second is the several nymph stages, and the last is the adult.

As expected, female cockroaches carry the oothecae, which are the cockroach’s egg cases. Each case contains a different number of eggs depending on the cockroach species. For instance, one egg case of American cockroach species has approximately 16 eggs. On the other hand, the German species has around 40 eggs per egg case.

Female cockroaches always ensure the safety of their eggs. They will find a safe location inside your house where they can deposit their eggs one by one. That’s why most of you will notice cockroach eggs behind wall gaps, furniture, or cabinets.

This article will discuss identifying the three common cockroach species: German, American, and Oriental Cockroaches. Read on to know further.

What are Baby Cockroaches?

Despite the small size of a baby cockroach, they can still frighten most homeowners. A baby cockroach refers to the cockroach still in the second development phase — the nymph stage. Therefore, if you notice signs of cockroach infestation in your house, you need to fix it immediately before it results in a bigger issue.

What Do Baby Cockroaches Look Like?

Cockroach nymphs are the first sign you should keep an eye on to determine cockroach infestation. This is a disgusting creature because it has constant contact with any form of bacteria. These bacteria will stick to their body and can result in health issues for you and your family.

That’s why you need to fix this before it leads to a bigger problem.

Baby and adult cockroaches look exactly the same. The only difference is their size. After the female cockroach hatches their eggs, baby cockroaches have white hues on their body. But, it will turn darker after several hours.

Some baby cockroaches don’t have wings, or their wings are not fully developed. Before they reach full adulthood, they will go through several times of shedding. Also, their color will vary depending on their species.

The following are the three species of baby cockroaches in the US:

American Cockroaches

The natural color of an American cockroach is red. But, while they are in the nymph stage, their body color is brown to grayish. An adult American cockroach can grow up to 53 mm long.

Both genders of this species have wings and can fly. Compared to German cockroaches, the average lifespan of an American species is around two years. Although they live outdoors, they tend to visit your house and find your food storage area.

German Cockroaches

German baby cockroaches have tan stripes and darker body colors compared to adults. Their approximate size is around 13 to 16 mm. It could be the most common species of cockroaches around the world. Compared to other species, this is more capable of producing several eggs. Their average lifespan is up to one year.

Oriental Cockroaches

Lastly, Oriental baby cockroaches have red to brown colors together with dark and light stripes. Male Oriental cockroaches can grow around 25 mm long while the females’ average length is 32 mm.

Both genders have wings. Thus, they can fly at a distance. However, they have a short life span, usually around half a year. They feed themselves with decaying organic foods.

As these cockroach species shed during the nymph stage, their coloring and size will constantly change until they look like their adult counterparts.

Size of Cockroaches

Now that you know the color and size of three species of cockroaches: American, German, and Oriental cockroaches, you may be thinking that their size cannot pose a threat to you.

Despite their size, cockroaches are still creepy creatures. They can pose a risk to you, your family, and your property. In addition, both baby and adult cockroaches can contaminate your foods.

Baby cockroaches only need a little amount of time before they reach adulthood. Among the three species mentioned above, American cockroaches have the largest size.

Most of you are afraid of large cockroaches. But, little did you know that the small ones could cause a bigger problem?

Generally, you can find German cockroaches inside your home. This is because they tend to grow their population in a dark, tight area. On the other hand, American cockroaches are an outdoor species. They only enter your house to look for shelter and food.

With that being said, you might have a hard time controlling cockroach infestation in your area.

How to Prevent A Cockroach Infestation

There are several ways you can do to ensure your home is free from cockroaches. The primary reason why cockroaches enter your property is that they search for shelter, water, and food.

One way of keeping them away from your home is to get rid of these things. Make it a habit to vacuum your floors and wipe up food and water spills. Generally, you need to keep your area clean and sanitized.

On the other hand, if you have a dog or a cat, make sure to clean their bowl every after eating. Also, make sure always to declutter. Remove anything that piles up, such as papers, to ensure cockroaches won’t see any place to grow.

How to Treat A Cockroach Infestation

If you notice that your home is infested with cockroaches, the first thing you need to do is to spray them with a cockroach-killing product. You can find cockroach repellant sprays on the market.

Also, keep your home clean and clutter-free to ensure that these disgusting cockroaches won’t come back.

Conclusion

To sum it up, cockroaches have several species. However, American, German, and Oriental cockroaches are their three common species.

Most of you think that cockroaches all look the same. The truth is that each species has unique characteristics. You can differentiate the three mentioned species by taking a look at their color, size, etc.

Remember, whether your home is infested with either baby or adult cockroaches, you need to eliminate cockroaches immediately. Always keep your home clean. Wipe away food residues and water spills. Also, always do declutter to remove the hiding spots for cockroaches.
