What Are Silverfish, and Do They Bite?

Silverfish are very small insects that look a little bit like an earwig. They have six legs and a tapered body with a flat, scaly exterior somewhat resembling a tiny lobster tail. This shy insect has long antennae and a few long appendages near their tails that have earned them the nickname “bristletails” in addition to their known name. These nocturnal insects are shy of humans and are not known to bite humans, carry toxins, or cause any danger to pets. They are tiny, typically measuring 12 to 19 millimeters, and are hard to spot as they are mostly translucent.

Do Silverfish Bite?

Silverfish have jaws and tiny teeth, but all they are known to eat is cellulose. Their jaws are known as very weak, and scientists have not found a silverfish bite on a person or another animal. Silverfish bite wallpaper, fabric, and books when they crawl through buildings. People who have them nearby may find odd marks without a known origin on wallpaper.

Unfortunately, silverfish have one very annoying effect: they leave yellow fecal matter in their wake. They also molt their skins, leaving them to dry up and collect where you don’t want them. The dry skins are not pleasant, and they trigger allergies in some people that may remind you of dust mite allergies.

What to Do About Silverfish

Silverfish love moisture, and they can reproduce quickly. Your best bet is to completely reseal your home if you find them or their residue inside. You will then need to dehumidify. Silverfish evade humans, and they can go long periods without eating. They are likely to get around chemical traps left in the area by homeowners. It can take an experienced exterminator to get rid of them and fid out where they are hiding in the building. Synergy has experience with all kinds of pest control and can help you with these elusive insects.
