What Are Flying Roaches?

Flying roaches are a type of roach that tends to appear frequently in bathrooms and kitchens, which makes them a nuisance. They fly up to 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4 meters) high in search of food, making it hard for them to stay out of your home and annoying for you to see them. Flying roaches often hitch a ride into your home with your groceries or bags, or they can enter your home through a roof or chimney. These insects are most active at night, usually between midnight and 4 a.m., but they’re also active during the day, especially during summer.

Are flying roaches dangerous?

Flying roaches are a serious issue. Though thankfully, relatively rare, the critters can cause major structural damage to your house. Not only will you have to deal with them, but they’ll also attach themselves to your clothes, hair, and pets. When flying roaches get inside your house, serious structural damage can occur.

Watching a roach fly through the air may seem harmless, but insects like roaches can carry diseases, mites, and even parasites. This means that even if you never touch one of these flying insects, you may still be at risk of catching a preventable disease. Because roaches can fly into rooms and homes, it is important to control all areas where these insects can fly.

Common Places flying roaches hide

Most people know that cockroaches can be found anywhere, but how many are familiar with where they might be hiding? Roaches love dark, damp spaces with elevated humidity. As you likely know, there are many places this holds true, including bathrooms and kitchens. However, there are other areas in your home that you may not immediately think of as being hiding spots for roaches.

Flying roaches are insects that are typically red or brown. They are considered the most common type of roach and are often found in the dark, moist areas such as pantries and basements, under sinks, bathtubs, and dark, secluded areas in your house. These insects are known to fly, and while most people won’t ever see one flying, they can be seen resting on surfaces, especially at night. And flying roaches aren’t the only type of roach that can hide in dark, moist areas. Cockroaches are another common type of roach that can hide just about anywhere, including areas that most people would never think to look.

Roach infestation Signs

Even though roaches that fly are difficult to see at night because they are nocturnal, these telltale indications of infestation are always there.

  • The smell of mold or mildew
  • The house is littered with dead roaches
  • Tiny excrement that resembles ground coffee or black pepper
  • Under or behind furniture, tan or brown oval egg cases

Types of Flying Cockroaches

Cockroaches are pretty common in the Jackson, MS metro area. When we get into the rainy season, you can find many of them hiding in the corners of your house. While they’re not exactly the best at being cute, they are pretty annoying when they start chewing on the food you’ve been trying to prepare. Cockroaches aren’t just a nuisance, though. They also pose a health risk to humans, spreading things like salmonella and dysentery. Here are the most common flying roaches that can invade your home:

  • American cockroach: The American cockroach has three pairs of wings that fold flat against its abdomen. The roach is about 1⁄4 of an inch long and has reddish-brown to dark brown legs and antennae. The roach can live indoors or outdoors and prefers to live in warm, humid areas.
  • Pennsylvania Wood cockroach: Flying cockroaches that live in Pennsylvania are called Pennsylvania wood cockroaches. They are about 4.5 to 5 mm long, greyish-brown, with wings that span up to 1.5 inches and legs that are brown. Pennsylvania wood cockroaches are nocturnal creatures, and like other cockroaches, they prefer to live under things, such as wood piles, logs, mulch, and among stumps.
  • Smokybrown cockroach: Cockroaches can be found all over the world, and they come in many shapes and sizes. Some cockroach species can fly, and those that do are commonly referred to as smokybrown cockroaches. These roaches are typically light brown, brown, gray, or black in color and have wings (also called membranous wings). The wings are short and rounded, covering only the roach’s front portion. Cockroaches can fly short distances and land on walls, furniture, and other objects.
  • Asian cockroach: The Asian cockroach is the most common species found in homes, apartments, and commercial buildings. These roaches are reddish-brown in color, about 1/8 of an inch in length, and can be found scurrying around baseboards, crawl spaces, and other dark, damp areas. Interestingly, they are not generally found in kitchens but prefer warm, dry locations. Cockroaches thrive in warm, moist conditions, so it’s no surprise that they prefer areas in homes that retain a lot of moisture, including kitchens, bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms, and near window frames.
  • Australian cockroach: Australian cockroaches are large, noisy brown roaches that thrive in warm, humid climates. They typically prefer damp areas and like to hide in dark, cluttered spaces. The Australian cockroach likes to find food at night, typically hiding in small cracks and crevices that are hard to reach during the day. These roaches have built-in wings that help them find food and escape danger.
