Getting Rid of Bed Bugs and Other Bed Bug FAQ’s

What scent keeps bed bugs away?

There are a number of scents and essential oils that could possibly be effective keeping bed bugs bugs away.  Though the evidence is not strong, the most common oil that may keep bed bugs away is peppermint oil.

Some of the other scents that keep bed bugs away include:  cinnamon oil, tea tree oil, blood orange oil, clove oil, and lavender.

Does vinegar kill bed bugs?

There are a number of insecticides and organic products that will kill bed bugs.  But does vinegar kill bed bugs?  Spraying vinegar on affected areas may help manage the bed bugs you can see.  Bed bugs sprayed directly with vinegar will likely die.

Unfortunately, vinegar, like a lot of natural products, does not have much of a residual action.  Which means, any bed bug not directly contacted by the vinegar spray will not die.

Small black bed bugs?

Seeing small black bed bugs may be an indicator of a bed bug infestation or may be a completely different type of pest.  Bed bugs that appear black are most likely bed bugs that have recently fed.  The black color is due to recently consumed blood.

Other black bugs that look like bed bugs include: ticks, fleas, carpet beetles, spider beetles, weevils, swallow bugs, cockroach nymphs, and bat bugs.

Mattress cover for bed bugs?

Mattress covers designed specifically for bed bug prevention can be effective at reducing chances of a serious bed bug infestation.  Mattress covers can eliminate hiding spots for bed bugs including one of their favorites: in seams and zippers of mattresses.

Investing in a high quality mattress cover for bed bug prevention can pay off.  Some bed bug mattress covers are even impregnated with insecticides to kill any bed bugs that come in contact with it.

Flea bites vs bed bugs?

Small red bumps on your skin could be caused by a number of things, including fleas and bed bugs.  So how do you decide if it is flea bites vs bed bugs bites?  Flea bites are often found on lower parts of the body as fleas live on the ground.

Bed bug bites often occur on exposed areas of the skin while sleeping.  Bed bug bites may also appear as a line of bites on the body.

Can you see bed bugs?

While bed bug eggs and bed bug nymphs may be extremely hard to spot, adult bed bugs are visible to the human eye.  Mature adult bed bugs grow up to 1/4 inch in length and are reddish brown in color.  So yes you can see bed bugs.

Since bed bugs hide during the day, it is much more likely to notice signs of bed bugs first, instead of live bed bugs.  Signs of bed bugs can include shed skins, blood and fecal stains on mattresses, and bed bug bites.

What do bed bugs hate?

Bed bugs and other insects hate the smell of different types of scents including citrus, tea tree oil, mint, lavender oil, cinammon, blood orange oil, and basil.  While bed bugs may be repelled by these oils it doesn’t mean they will eliminate or kill bed bugs.  For that you will most likely need the services of a bed bug exterminator.
