Termite Control and Prevention in the South

Termite Control and Prevention

Where Do Termites Live?

The number one question we get from homeowners is: “How do I know if I have termites?”. First, a simple answer. Everyone has termites. An acre of ground in the southern U.S may contain up to 14 separate colonies of termites. With between 60,000 and 1 million termites living in each colony, termites are everywhere!

A House With Termite Damage Often Looks The Same As Every Other House….On The Surface

Termite structural damage in the U.S. has become a significant financial burden, causing up to $5 billion in damage annually. Unfortunately, since termites are subterranean, most homeowners don’t recognize termite infestations until years after they begin. Once damage becomes visible to homeowners, it is most likely major structural damage to the home has occurred.

How Do You Know If You Are Protected?

If your home is five years old or newer, the termiticide barrier applied during construction is probably still active(Please note: The duration of 100% effectiveness of the termite barrier is highly dependent on the termiticide used as well as the application process). Renewing your termite bond or contract annually is essential to maintaining this protection. If there is an occurrence of termites while your home is protected by a termite bond, the termite company will come back to your property and re-treat at no charge.

No Termite Bond or Contract?

Owning a home without a termite bond is like driving a car with no insurance(Only your home is a lot more valuable than your car!) Termite barrier treatments, either with liquid termiticides or the latest termite baiting technology, are extremely effective at preventing termite infestations. The initial expense of a termite barrier treatment is minimal when compared to the cost of repairing termite damage to your home.

Comprehensive Termite Inspections Are Critical

What should a homeowner without termite insurance do? First, contact a licensed termite pest control company and request a comprehensive inspection of your home. The inspection should include both the interior and exterior of your home and may take up to an hour to complete. The inspector will be looking for visible signs of active termites such as mud tubes, shed wings, and termite swarmers. Additionally the inspector will identify any visible termites of termite damage to wood, window sills, and exterior structures. A termite inspection report will also include an assessment of areas around your home with high moisture content which is conducive to termite activity.

Termite Barrier Application: Liquid Or Bait?

Following the inspection, you will be presented with options and an estimate for a termite barrier treatment. This may include a liquid termiticide, termite bait stations, or a combination of both. There are advantages and disadvantages of different termite barrier options. Ask questions to make sure you are getting the best option for your home and family.
