What is the lifespan of a fly?

A common question for homeowners experiencing fly infestations is how long will it last.  What is the lifespan of a fly?  Other than mayflies, most flies live much longer than 24 hours.  Flies also reproduce rapidly so new flies will quickly replace older flies that die.  Fly infestations can last for months if not addressed.

House flies and fruit flies are two of the most common types of flies invading our homes.  House flies can live up to a month.  Fruit flies can live up to 2 months.  Attacking the source of the fly infestation is key to getting rid of flies for good.  Rotting food, garbage, dirty dishes in the sink, and organic matter in drains and garbage disposals are just a few areas where flies like to live and breed.

Killing rats with salt.  Does it work?

Can salt kill rats? Yes, but it takes a lot.  Killing rats with salt means a rat needs to consume at least 80gm of salt for it to work.  Salt consumed at this level or above can cause inflammation, weakness, and blindness in rats.  So is salt the best option to kill rats safely?

Salt is rarely effective at killing rats based on the amount of salt rats need to consume.  A better option for most homeowner is the use of rat glue boards and rat snap traps.  When placed properly under appliances, along walls, and near rat runways, traps are both safe and effective.

Best mouse trap to get rid of mice quickly?

Trapping mice is often the best first choice for homeowners with a rodent problem.  Rodent poisons are highly effective; however they are also very dangerous.  Dangers from the use of rodent poisons include: accidental poisoning of humans, non-target animals and pets.  The safest option to get rid of mice is often the use of mouse traps.

Two of the best mouse traps are mouse snap traps and mouse glue boards.  Positioning these traps along walls and under appliances where mice like to run is the best way to kill mice quickly.  Trying out different types of baits for these traps to find one that is most attractive to mice is essential.  Types of mouse baits for traps includes: peanut butter, cheese, chocolate, fruits, nuts, and nesting materials.

Squirrel poop images.  How to identify squirrel droppings?

Signs of rodent droppings in your attic can be a cause for concern.  Rats and squirrels are notorious for chewing through wood siding and eaves seeing protection from the weather.  Even worse, squirrels like to sharpen their teeth on things such as electrical wiring, creating the possibility of house fires.

So what does squirrel poop or droppings look like?  Squirrel droppings are often confused with droppings from mice.  Squirrel droppings are oblong pellets at up to 3/8 inches in length.  Squirrel poop has rounded tips with a slight bulging center.  Also squirrel droppings may appear dark in color initially and then lighten over time.

What do baby cockroaches look like?

The presence of baby cockroaches in your home can be a sign of a growing cockroach infestation.  Due to their ability to rapidly breed, cockroaches can become a serious problem in a short period of time.  Proper identification of the species of cockroach you are dealing with is essential.

Baby American roach nymphs start at about 1/4 inch in length and are blackish brown in color.  Baby German roaches are much smaller at 1/8 inch in length and almost black in color.  The lack of wings is a good indicator that the roach you are seeing is a baby roach.

What is the long-term effects of spider bites?

Fortunately, spider bites are rare and most that do occur do not result in serious medical issues.  Spider bites from Brown Recluse and Black Widow spiders are two types of spiders whose bites can result in serious medical situations.  Identifying the type of spider that bit you is the most important first step before deciding whether medical treatment is required.

Spider bites from Brown Recluse and Black widow spiders can be fatal, but that is rare.  Most bites result in redness, pain, and swelling.  Long-term effects of spider bites include nausea, vomiting, tremors, and tissue necrosis.
