black widow spider bite

Synergy Jackson Pest Control: FAQ’s About Spiders

What is a false widow spider?

False widow spiders are similar in appearance to black widow spiders, but with a big difference.  Bites from false widow spiders are much less dangerous and often result in just pain at the site of the bite.  There are three common types of false widow spiders in the U.S.: rabbit hutch spider, cupboard spider, and the noble false widow spider.

The female false widow spider has a shiny abdomen, like black widow spiders.  While the design on their abdomens are similar to black widows, it is not the distinctive red hour glass.

What is a recluse spider and what do brown recluse spider bites look like?

Along with black widow spiders, the brown recluse spider is among the most feared and dangerous spiders in the U.S.  Brown recluse spiders are larger brown spiders with a couple of distinguishing characteristics.  One is that most brown recluse have a violin pattern on their backs.  Two is that brown recluse spiders only have 6 legs, instead of 8.

Brown recluse spider bites are rare but serious.  Medical attention may be required if symptoms develop, usually within 8 hours of the bite.  Serious symptoms of a brown recluse bite include muscle pain, vomiting, severe itching, and severe pain at the site of the bite.

What is a wolf spider?

Wolf spiders are large, at almost 2 inches in length, and fast.  Wolf spiders use their speed and size to capture prey rather than relying on webs.  Their appearance is lighter gray to brown in color.

Wolf spiders are not considered to be aggressive towards humans; however, they will bite when threatened.  Wolf spider bites can be quite painful.  A wolf spider bite is not usually severe, unless the victim has an allergic reaction to its venom.

What are jumping spiders? Do jumping spiders bite?

Jumping spiders are small spiders, black with white accents, that have the ability to jump to capture prey.  Most spiders have excellent vision, but jumping spiders have vision that puts them above most other spiders.  Jumping spiders also don’t trap insects with webs.

Jumping spiders are venomous; however, bites from jumping spiders are rare.  Jumping spiders are not aggressive and will attempt to run if threatened.

What are common house spiders?

Spiders around your house are beneficial as they prey on pesky insects.  Spiders inside your home are a different story.  Most spiders can bite but there are only a few really dangerous spiders.

Common house spiders include the hobo spider, wolf spider, cellar spider, American house spider, and Daddy Long Legs or Harvestman spider.  Dangerous spiders sometimes found inside homes include the Black Widow spider and Brown Recluse spider.
