Rat droppings size?

Animal droppings inside your home should be properly identified to determine the best course of action.  Rat droppings or rat poop has some distinctive features to help you identify the presence of rats in your home.

Rat droppings are much larger than mouse droppings at 1/2-3/4 inches in length.  Rat droppings are shiny and black with blunt ends.  Mouse droppings are much smaller with smooth pointed ends.

What looks like mouse poop but isn’t?

Droppings from an unknown animal or insect inside your home could be a sign of a serious infestation, or not, depending on what it is.  There are a number of different animals with similar droppings to mouse poop.  Even lizard droppings can look similar to mouse droppings; however, white tips on the ends are a sign that the droppings are from a lizard and not a mouse.

Rat droppings are much larger than mouse droppings at 1/2 to 3/4 inch in length.  Cockroach droppings are 2/8 inch and black.  Squirrel droppings are closer in size to mouse droppings but are round and cylindrical.

How to know if a spider is poisonous?

Most spiders you encounter around your home are not harmful.  Spiders are actually quite beneficial helping control unwanted insects and flying pests.  While many spiders have fangs, spider bites, especially from poisonous spiders, are extremely rare.

Common spiders that are not harmful around your home include: cellar spiders, grass spiders, jumping spiders, and hobo spiders.

Venomous spiders that you may encounter are: Black widow spiders, Brown recluse spiders, and Wolf spiders.

How to catch a rat fast?

Catching a rat fast involves knowing what rats like and where they like to travel.  Rats runways are usually along walls and under furniture and appliances, not in the middle of a room.  Rat traps, such as glue traps and snap traps, can be effective when placed near rat runways.

The proper selection of rat bait for rat traps is also essential to catch rats quickly.  Rat bait needs to be similar to the type of rat’s diet.  Knowing the species of rat infesting your home is important to bait selection.  Baits with strong odors are often more effective and attractive to rats.

How do bed bugs start?

Bed bugs are resilient and excellent travelers.  Bed bugs can get into your home in a number of ways including: luggage from a recent trip, purses, kids backpacks from school, and recently purchased used furniture.  Additionally, for residents living in multi-family housing, bed bugs can come through walls and ceilings from neighboring units.

Once inside your home, bed bugs are prolific breeders and can rapidly multiply.  What starts as a small infestation can quickly grow out of control.  Bed bugs are also excellent at hiding so you may not notice you have a bed bug infestation until it becomes a huge problem.
