Spider Bites: Black Widow and Brown Recluse Spiders

Spiders have often been blamed for various types of skin infections. However, not every spider has the ability to cause any harm since most of them don’t even have fangs long enough to break the skin. When others do bite, they pose little to no threat to humans. Despite this being true, you should exercise caution when dealing with some species; for example, in the US, the brown recluse and the black widow are some of the species with venom strong enough to cause serious harm to their victim.

A spider bite has a close resemblance to that of any other insect bite. The distinctive fact is are usually in the symptoms. The first thing you will notice is a little bump on the skin that may get itchy, irritating, and can swell up in time. You are likely to feel some mild pain that may last for an hour or so, depending on the type of spider that bit you.

Black Widows

A black widow spider can easily be identified with the red hourglass shape on the bottom of its abdomen. These spiders are black and shiny and are about half an inch long. They are mostly found in the western and southern regions of the US. However, you can also find them in different parts of the northern regions. These spiders often build their homes in quiet and out-of-the-way places, including garages, attics, woodpiles, closets, and sheds.

What’s a Black Widow Bite Like?

Like most spider bites, a Black Widow bite is like a pinprick; hence it can go unnoticed for a while. However, within an hour, the first signs will start to show; these present themselves in the form of small, red swellings. As time progresses, you will start feeling some pain that may spread to the chest, back, and belly. In some cases, you may develop stomach cramps or feel a little stiffness in the belly. At this point, some patients may begin to sweat with others developing;
•    Trouble breathing
•    Nausea
•    Vomiting
•    Increased heart rate
Here, the bite area may become redder and more swollen, causing pain and discomfort.

Brown Recluse

The brown recluse is one of the most confusing, especially if you don’t know what to look for. Some people may go for the violin shape part found where the legs attach to the body, while others will go for the eyes. Unlike most spiders, the Brown Recluse features six eyes compared to the eight found in most spiders. It has two eyes at the front and two on either side in contrast with most spiders with two rows of four eyes.

These spiders are mostly found in the southern Midwest regions of the South. The Brown Recluse builds its home indoors, away from busy sections of the house. You can find them in the basement of the attic hidden in one of your old trunks or suitcases.

What’s a Brown Recluse Bite Like?

The first feeling is that of a little sting. However, over the next eight hours, you will start to experience pain, which will rise gradually. At this point, you will notice a small white blister with a red ring around it in the bite area. In some cases, the skin around the bite area may turn purple or blue with an open sore that gets bigger for up to ten days. The symptoms of a Brown recluse bite tend to vary in victims, with some experiencing chills, fever, rash, and upset stomach.

Important Facts To Know About Spider Bites

The Black Widow and the Brown Recluse are among the most venomous spiders on the planet. Here are a few facts to consider in case you are bitten.

It’s Very Painful

A spider bite is often negligible, with most victims experiencing just a slight prick on the skin. However, for the Recluse and Widow, this is just the beginning. The small amount of venom injected under the skin is likely to cause intense pain for up to 12 hours when unattended.

The Venom Can Be Neutralized by Antivenin

When left unattended, a spider’s bite can result in serious health complications. To avoid the spread of venom in the body, it is advisable to use antivenin to neutralize it. Keep in mind that this solution mostly works for the Black Widow. Before receiving an anti-venom for a spider bite, it is best to give a clear description of the spider.

Recovery Can Take Days

A spider bite is often not fatal, especially when addressed on time. However, it’s best to note that the recovery process may take some days. Recovery time tends to vary from one victim to another depending on the severity of the bite, the type of spider, and the medication used.
