Killing Mosquitoes: How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes in Mississippi

We all know the whining sound of a mosquito flying around you. This is a sure indicator that you might be bitten at any point, after which you might be scratching and itching for some time. Mosquitos are perennial problems in many areas where there are warmer climate conditions. There’s more than one way to get rid of mosquitos and keep you free from their bites. Read on to find out which methods work best to kill off and repel these persistent pests.

Why Are There So Many Mosquitos in Mississippi?

There are over 3,000 species of mosquitos in the world, and around 50 of them are present in Mississippi. Most types of mosquitos are not dangerous to human beings, but many of them do spread diseases such as malaria. In Mississippi, only about three or four of the mosquito species present transmit diseases. Mosquitos can be troublesome to both humans and animals, so you need to figure out how you can get rid of mosquitos.

If you are wondering why there are so many mosquitos in your area, there can be a few possible answers. Mosquitos are more prevalent in some areas than others, and it has a lot to do with the prevailing weather conditions and time of the year. Mississippi has relatively high numbers of mosquitos, and these are active as long as the temperatures are above 50 degrees.

Other factors that lead to mosquito infestations include the presence of a water body close by. Swimming pools, ponds, puddles, and other forms of standing water can all attract mosquitos to your area. These flying insects love crawlspace and tend to be more active when it gets darker during the day. If you are ready to find out how to kill off the mosquitos infesting your home, we have a few ideas to get you started.

What Can You Do to Get Rid of Mosquitos?

It’s time to look at the different ways you can use to eradicate mosquitos. Some of these methods involve killing them, while others simply repel them or reduce how attracted they are to your vicinity. If you go with the repellant option, you are probably going to have to repeat this method daily and even more often.

  • Mosquito repellant products- There are so many versions of mosquito repellant products you can purchase. Many of these are natural, while others include a range of commercial chemical compounds. Mosquito repellants can be topical creams, sprays, and scented candles. Some of the natural mosquito-repellant scents that are often used in these products include citronella, lavender, eucalyptus, clove, and peppermint. DEET is a standard chemical repellant used in many mosquito repellant products. The results of all of these options vary, but you should be able to keep mosquitos away from you for a few hours at a time.
  • Make your own mosquito repellant solutions- Many of the herbs and scents mentioned in the previous method can also be used to create natural and DIY mosquito repellants for your home. For example, you can make use of essential oils such as lemon, lavender, and eucalyptus and add a few drops to a cup of water. After mixing up these two ingredients, you can add the solution to a spray bottle and use it for your skin and home.
  • Seal up any gaps- Mosquitos can easily find their way into your house when you have many gaps and patches in your window and door screens. You can keep these insects out when you make sure that your home is properly sealed and any gaps are fixed in a timely fashion.
  • Use mosquito nets in your bedrooms- In areas where mosquito infestations are common, you might find mosquito nets fixed above the beds. These features help to keep you free from mosquito bites during the night. During the winter, you can always temporarily remove the nets to make space.
  • Make your own mosquito trap– You can always check with your local hardware about what kind of mosquito traps they have. The trap method is quite straightforward, so if you are fond of DIY solutions, you can always make one for yourself. You need to prepare a solution to attract mosquitos, and you can do this by boiling a cup of water and a cup of water together, then adding another two cups of water to cool off the syrup. Add a teaspoon of active dry yeast when the mixture is around 90 degrees. The next step is to cut the bottle in half and tuck the top half into the bottom one with an upside-down orientation.

You can then pour the mixture into the trap and secure it with tape. This method is effective at attracting, trapping, and killing mosquitos, but you may need to change out the solution every so often.

  • Keep a bug spray close- Bug sprays are an effective way to kill mosquitos in a room. You can keep one nearby when it is mosquito season. There are natural and chemical options, so be sure to read through the product information carefully to know what it contains and how to get the best results.

All of the methods outlined here can be very effective in dealing with a mosquito problem in your home and area. For maximum effect, you might even have to layer up more than one approach. You can combine these ideas to deal with the mosquitos in your home. We recommend getting rid of stagnant water and treating your pond and swimming pool water, together with one or two other methods.
