Do All Spiders Bite? How to Tell If A Spider is Poisonous in Mississippi

The question of whether a spider was poisonous or not is a question many have pondered about. Perhaps a spider was spotted crawling along the wall of your bedroom that had you thinking you could have been bitten. Maybe there was a spider web in the corner of your front door. Whatever the reason, it can be unsettling knowing that you are never more than a few feet away from one in Mississippi.

Most of all spiders are venomous or poisonous. The color of a spider or its patterns can help determine whether it is poisonous or not. Though spiders can be dangerous to humans, they hardly attack unless threatened or provoked. There are a select few spiders whose bites can be detrimental to humans.

It can be nerve-wracking trying to figure out if a spider is poisonous. This article houses the answer to this particular question.

How Many Species of Spiders Are There?

There are more than 3,000 species of spiders in the US. Many scientists believe that roughly 200 of these spiders pose a danger to humans. Of those 200 species, Mississippi is home to 27 of them including the popular black widow, brown recluse, and the wolf spider.

Do All Spiders Bite?

Certain spiders have fangs long enough to penetrate human skin. Depending on the spider, the venom can be severe enough to leave harmful side effects. Many spiders fangs and mouths are too short to leave a bite at all. spiders actually need their venom for prey. A spider’s venom has not evolved enough to take on large mammals and thus it is rare that a venomous spider bites a human causing death.

What is the Difference Between Poisonous and Venomous?

Poisonous spiders are hazardous when ingested. These spiders are typically incapable of leaving a bite or biting at all. Poisonous spiders can be a hazard to animals, and if you have pets it would be wise to keep your eye on them to make sure they’re not ingesting them. If you have small children you want to make sure they are not grabbing these spiders and placing them in their mouths.

Venomous spiders on the other hand are characterized by a noticeable bite left on the skin. These are also characterized by skin markings on their bodies or other unique characteristics.

The Black Widow spider, typically the females, are characterized by red or orange hourglass shapes on their thorax. Sometimes these Black Widow spiders can be mistaken for other spiders, as some may not have that colored symbol on their bodies at all. These spiders can often be found more towards the ground level. If you plan on removing these spiders most humanely, it is recommended that you use heavy duty gloves that are incapable of being penetrated in case of a bite.

Brown recluse spiders are light brown in color and can blend in with other light brown items such as dirt or furniture and more. Most spiders have eight eyes, whereas the brown recluse is characterized by having only six eyes that run up its head in a straight line. Brown recluse spiders are also characterized by a violin-shaped symbol on its body. The name describes these spiders perfectly. They do not like to be out in the open, hence why they’re called brown recluses.

How are Spiders Getting in my Home?

The weather in Mississippi is the perfect climate for spiders to thrive in. It would be no surprise if you happened to find one of these creatures cohabiting in or around your home. Though there is a species of spiders that are larger than others, most spiders are small enough to fit through cracks and tiny holes in your home. It may be impossible to detect every small nook and cranny that these creatures could be getting into. Spackling tiny holes is a good idea to prevent spiders from crawling into your home. You can also use putty. Corks come in different sizes and are very helpful and preventing those spiders from crawling into your home as well.

How Do I Treat a Spider Bite?

If you have been bitten by a spider, you can detect signs and symptoms easily. Nausea, headaches, and vomiting are three common side effects of a spider bite. Rest and hydration are important if you experience any of these symptoms. If there is incessant itching then investing in over-the-counter itch creams would be a good idea. Rashes, swelling, and pain at the site of a bite are symptoms as well. If the bite is severe enough, it might require some antibiotics.

How Do I Get Rid of the Spiders?

Getting rid of spiders does not require a lot of work. The most common way to get rid of them is typically by smacking them with something hard. You have the option of using pesticides to get rid of poisonous spider in Mississippi. When opting for pesticide, make sure that you are in a well-ventilated area so as not to inhale the fumes.

There is also a possibility that the spider you find may be female and may have laid eggs somewhere else around your home. Dusting and vacuuming for these creepy crawly’s is the humane way of getting rid of the spiders versus using pesticides. Pesticides are not only used for eliminating spiders but also act as a barrier for your home to prevent those spiders from accessing them.

Should I Worry About a Spider Infestation?

If you find webs randomly located throughout your home and perhaps even egg sacs, the chances are that your home has been infested with spiders. In cases such as this, it is in your best interest to contact your local pest control exterminator experts. They are highly skilled and trained in the removal of spiders, webs, and any egg sacs that may be found in or around your home. Once you contact a professional, they can schedule a date convenient for you to visit your home to see how bad the infestation might be.

For added measure, it is best to simply steer clear of spiders whether you know if it is poisonous or not.
